Glossary for the airline industry

From A-Z, this glossary covers definitions and explanations for common airline industry terminology.

PTC

Passenger type code. See also passenger type.

public

A type of batch status indicating that data contained within the batch has been distributed in the subscription process. See also batch status.

public fare

A fare that is available to the general public for purchase. See also private fare.

public tariff

A tariff whose data is available for viewing by any organization once it is processed through GFS. Also called published tariff.

published fare

1. The industry term for a fare available to the general public for purchase; usually called public fare at ATPCO.

2. (data application) ATPCO term for published round-trip or one-way fares on the ATPCO fare record. Also called specified. These fares may or may not have limited distribution (be private fares).

published fare amount

The filed and available fare used for fare calculation and/or ticketing display to create Selling or Net amounts.

publishing carrier

The carrier who owns or publishes the fare. Also called owning carrier.

purge

A program that removes expired or unwanted data from the master file.

qualifying category

The conditional category that contains the information that must be met for the main category to be validated. See also main category.

quantum pricing

A type of optimized pricing where airlines make frequent updates on automated price determination and upload APIs, and then adjust the flight availability, linked to fare products, for specific customers or in specific situations.

query

A viewing facility that allows the display of records in the database file without updating. A carrier using this facility can view all its own records and the public records of all other carriers. An ATPCO analyst can view all records of all carriers. Each criteria set contains one or more queries. Queries have four parts: Inclusion Criteria, Exclusion Criteria, Change Criteria, and Match Criteria.

query set

A group of multiple queries that are used to view the same data from different tariffs.

Research and development.

RACF

Resource Access Control Facility. RACF is the IBM security tool used to protect all mainframe resources from unauthorized use.

RASK

Revenue per average seat kilometer. A measure of financial performance for an airline, calculated by dividing total revenue per flight by the ASKs of the flight. In the United States, RASM (revenue per average seat mile) is used.

RASS

Revenue Accounting Settlement Services, these are products and tools ATPCO provides to help interline settlement processes.

RATD

Revenue Accounting Tax Database. A comprehensive and automated monthly snapshot of all interlineable taxes that provides the carrier with access to the taxes to be used for monthly settlement.

RBD

Reservation booking designator. Also called prime booking code or booking code.

re-pricing

The process of analyzing rules and conditions for a new ticket to replace an unused or partially flown ticket.

record

1. The computerized key information, including rate and fare information used by CRSs during autopricing to validate coded fare information.

2. Structure of the FareManager Rules system that comprises eight different record types. These records serve different functions in the processing of a fare and are accessed singly to be worked on or viewed in the FareManager Rules system.
